Allegiant

This six weeks I decided to read “Allegiant” by Veronica Roth.  Allegiant came out in the fall of 2013 and is a science fiction book. It is the third and final book of the Divergent series and is about a girl named Tris Prior who lives in the future where genetic damage in people has caused wars and led to the creation of “the tests”. These tests are made to cure genetic damage and Tris was once a part of one but escaped with a group of people including her boyfriend Tobias. The overall theme of the book is Tris and Tobias’ struggle for equality between the genetically pure and genetically damaged people.
The story is told in a first person point of view through alternating points of view between Tris and Tobias. The story begins with Tris, Tobias, and a group of Allegiants going against the new leader of their city and venturing out into the unknown land outside the fence. They discover a research center created to monitor their city which is actually a government test made to monitor genetically damaged people. They are welcomed into the research center and learn about genetic damage and the separation and neglect of people who have it, including Tobias. Tobias struggles with the label of genetically damaged and eventually he and Tris join a group to end the tests and abolish the separation of genetic damage and purity. The intended audience for this book is young adults between the ages of 13-18. The book is science fiction because it is set in a futuristic dystopian society where genetic damage has destroyed the government. The author keeps you interested by using plot twists and foreshadowing throughout the book. The authors style is to use constant dramatic events to draw in the reader and keep them on their toes and is effective for teenagers.
The book made me sad through traumatic events that occurred towards the end. This caused me to have more of a view on the affects of inequality and how it can change society as a whole. I also believed in her views of sacrifice and how it should not be done for yourself but for the community as a whole and the people you care for. This book reminds me of the Hunger Games because the main character Tris is a lot like Katniss in her bravery , love of her family, and overall personality.
Allegiant’s lessons of love and sacrifice throughout the book and the theme of equality make it a great book that the reader can learn from. I recommend this book for all young adults between the ages of 13-18.
