The Fault In Our Stars

The book The Fault in our Stars, written by John Green in 2012, is a realistic fiction book about a 16 year old girl named Hazel who has lung cancer. She goes to a support group for teens who are fighting cancer and meets Augustus Waters, a very attractive 17 year old who is recovering from osteosarcoma. The two have many adventures together, including going to Amsterdam to visit a famous author, and fall in love. But after a tragic event occurs, Hazel is forced to rethink everything she believes in. This book demonstrates that love triumphs over hardships including Hazel and Augustus' cancers.

The story is told from Hazel's point of view and reflects her thoughts and internal struggles. The book is about Hazel falling in love and discovering the hardships of peoples lives including her own. The intended audience is teens between the ages of 13-18 because they can relate to some of the problems teens face including new love, realizing that not everyone is perfect, and that everyone has flaws. The book is realistic fiction because it is not a true story but relates to things in real life including cancer and how people of all ages are fighting it everyday. The author keeps you interested by adding new internal and external conflicts throughout the book. The author's style is to use happiness as well as tragedy to draw in the reader and make them more interested in the story. He is very effective in doing this and keeps the reader captivated throughout the book.

The book made me very sad because of the tragic events throughout the story. This book also gave me some perspective about a person going through such traumatic events and how she deals with such great changes in her life. In addition it made me rethink my problems and how I deal with them. I think I relate to Hazel and her beliefs of life and how it isn't perfect and how everyone has faults. This story reminds me of the book My Sisters Keeper because in both books the families struggle with the hardships of having a child  with cancer.
The Fault in our Stars is an amazing book and keeps the reader on their toes the entire book. I would recommend this book to people 13 and older because of some the content and more mature themes.
