Painting The Black-Carl Deuker

This six weeks I read Painting the Black by Carl Deuker. Carl Deuker first published the book in 1997; it's a realistic fiction sports book, based around a 17-year-old named Ryan. He had never had anybody his age on his street, until somebody moved in at midnight one night. He was a starting quarterback and a starting pitcher. His name was Josh. The overall theme of this book was sports and friendship.

The point of view in my book was first person because Ryan was in the story. This story is told only from Ryan’s side, so not everything could be true and he might not know everything either. The plot is based around Ryan, because he tells the whole story. He hurt himself when he was 12 when he fell out of a tree. He messed up his ankle and never thought he would ever play baseball again, until Josh came. Josh gave Ryan a new life. Ryan used to be an outfielder, but switched to catcher for Josh and it stuck. Ryan and Josh both made varsity and they both started. Josh made some bad decisions though and Ryan sold him out after feeling too much guilt so Josh was kicked off the team and that resulted in the team losing the state championship. The intended audience of this book was probably ages 12-18. It was a realistic fiction book because everything that happened in the book could happen in real life, but it didn’t. The author kept me interested in the book by making it about baseball. I am a big baseball fan so I thought that this book was very good. The author’s style of writing was to tell the ending then go back and say how he got there. This made the book even more interesting to me.

This book affected me in many ways. It made me think that guilt can ruin a friendship, and so can secrets. It also made me think that making bad decisions only leads you to worse decisions. All of my ideas have stayed the same even after this book. I already knew that bad decisions only lead to even worse decisions. This book made me think of the last book I read, Heart of a Champion by Carl Deuker. Both books are very similar because they are both about baseball and by the same author.

I do like this book because it is about baseball, and it has a very good plot. I would recommend this book to others because of the great plot and how the story is said from Ryan’s perspective. He had to decide weather or not to sell out Josh and lose state or feel the guilt and win state.
