Prophecy of the Sisters

Prophecy of the Sisters, written by Michelle Zink, was first published in August of 2009. This book was during the 1800's in New York. This thrilling fantasy book is about two twin sisters, named Lia and Alice Milthrope, find that they are on opposite sides of an ancient prophecy that has strangely killed both their mother and their father. Lia and Alice fulfill the battle sisters from other generations have encountered, Lia fighting for the good and Alice fighting for the evil, but only one side will succeed. But will it be for the good or for the evil? The overall theme of this story is that you must stay strong and fight your hardest to protect and save the things you believe in and save the ones you love.

Prophecy of the Sisters was written in 1st person, the narrator being Lia. Twin sisters Lia and Alice's parents have been unexplainably killed and after trying to find out how, Lia and Alice figure out that their family has been a part of an ancient prophecy for as long as anyone could remember. After the sixteen year old sisters find out, Lia constantly searches for clues to end the prophecy while Alice starts mysteriously sitting in the "Dark room", which is a room in the sisters mansion that was once their mothers chambers and also which was strictly prohibited by their father, and while she is in there Lia overhears Alice speaking with mysterious voices. Lia and Alice must find and fulfill their roles in the prophecy, one the guardian and one the gate, and Lia must find the keys that will lock the gate and hold back the souls and the army of Samuel, but if Alice gets hold of the keys before Lia, the souls and the army of Samuel will reign the Earth and cause the seven plagues: death, famine, blood, fire, darkness, drought, and ruin. The intended audience for this book is from 6th to 8th grade. The general genre of this book is fantasy. This book is a fantasy because the author incorporated large amounts of witchcraft, such as spell casting and "roaming through the plans", which is when your soul is removed from your body and you roam the otherworlds. The author, Michelle Zink, kept me interested in her book because she added many cliffhangers and suspense into the story. I think that the authors style is a mysterious, mystical writing style. She associates her styles into her writing to create the suspenseful mood she had set for the whole story.

This book did not really affect me. Although, at some parts I was pulled into the book and I couldn't put it down, but I don't have any personal connections to the book. But, the fact that Lia and Alice have been destined to be on totally different sides of an ancient prophecy, for both the good and for the evil, is almost weird to me. During one part of the book, Lia is talking to her aunt and her aunt said that Alice was actually supposed to come out of the womb first (that is how the roles of the sisters are placed) and Lia second, but Lia actually came out first. so does that mess up the whole prophecy, could Lia be the end to the deathly prophecy? This book does not ll tie in with my own personal world view. I normally don't read the witch-crafty, otherworld types of books. I just decided to read it because when I was younger my friend showed me the book and told me to read it, so I did, but I couldn't remember it until I decided to reread it. Also, because I don't read these types of books, I don't really have any memories from other books.

Overall, this book was very well written. The way she added in gloomy and creepy aspects to the story was helpful with understanding the plot better and keeping the reader in suspense. I would recommend this book from anyone from 6th to 8th grade because although the plot is easy to comprehend, some parts are somewhat hard to process and you have to use your imagination and put yourself into the characters shoes so that you may help yourself understand what the author is trying to say.
